Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, Yokohama I went to Yokohama for Saint Patrick’s Day just gone— as rare a sight as any I have seen. O’Sakaguchi led the way: he’d brought his big baton and he twirled along a-wearing of the green. Behind him came the Kamakura Firemen’s Marching Band. They played ‘I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen’. It wasn’t great for marching but we tried and, hand in hand, we swayed along a-wearing of the green. Next came the Kawasaki Irish Dancers: they were good, each one a dark-eyed Japanese colleen. Mac Nakamura piped them on to ‘Maggie in the Wood’ and they jigged along a-wearing of the green. The Tokyo Irish Setters Club had travelled down in force. The dogs were pretty frisky, and were keen to join the fun. In natty caps, and smartly groomed of course, they pranced along a-wearing of the green. They took me for an Irishman on Patrick’s Day just gone (though I’m about as Irish as the Queen), and rushed to take my picture, since I was the only one, as I marched along a-wearing of the green. |
